Met Ball Marvels

As I type, the Met Ball revels are ongoing.  But since I am not among the revelers, I am home oogling their dresses and dreaming of being with them (but sort of feeling grateful that I don't need to be wearing six inch heels).  Below are my first impressions of my personal Best Dressed for the evening.  Of course, there are tons of people looking gorgeous (hi Gisele and Tom!), but I'm trying to keep my list short and fab.  Here goes...

Solange Knowles really brought a lot of the elements of Spring 2012 fashion into one Rachel Roy-designed dress: neon (or nearly neon) yellow and a peplum.  With her amazing hair (don't you know, I dream of having an Afro?), her look really speaks to me.

I just generally love Emma Stone and wish she were my sister and/or best friend (I'm not picky), and, though I'm not normally a fan of red, her short, sweet, sparkly Lanvin number makes me smile (well, maybe it's the actual smile on her face that's making me smile, but the combination really raises my endorphin levels).

Rooney Mara in a gorgeous, partially transparent black lace Givenchy gown looks alluring and maybe a little bit dangerous.  I like the combination on her.

Carey Mulligan is wearing a Prada-designed fish scale-looking short dress, and I kind of like it.  It's fashion forward in a Prada-y way (a.k.a. I might not have liked it if I saw it yesterday, but now I kind of like it, and tomorrow it'll be all the rage, inspiring multiple different designers to try to do their own version of it, and five years from now, it'll be a priceless fashion artifact).

Mary Kate Olsen's long black satin gown is very covered-up, but I'm loving it, particularly with her nearly white-blonde (and slightly disheveled) locks.  It's like a grandma look with very ungrandma styling.

Finally, my beloved Gwyneth Paltrow.  She's also wearing Prada (notice the large paillette-encrusted pocket, reminiscent of Carey Mulligan's fish scales), and her dress is supershort in the front (but longer in the back).  Let's face it, Gwyneth's body makes boyfriend jeans look sexy (rather than the potato sack effect they often have on the rest of us), but the skin-baring qualities of this dress (combined with its soft hue) make this dress a stand-out to me.

I hope the reveling is as fabulous as it looks!  It certainly provided a lot of sartorial inspiration.

  2. I'm a big fan of Cary Mulligans dress. Weird, scale like, but in a good way.

    1. I'll have to check her out again! I did see her interviewed with Jason Wu, and I remember her being very sweet and charming, but I can't for the life of me remember her dress.
