A Dilemma

I have a real dilemma on my hands.  No, it's not whether or not to read The Hunger Games series.  I'm in, after hearing from many friends about how good they are, and then seeing the movie.  So now I'm reading the second book (I skipped the first since I saw the movie, and a friend told me the second will probably be my favorite).

My dilemma is about books, generally.  Though I have an iPad, and love it like all of Apple's other products, I really don't like reading books on it.  Well, I should qualify that.  I like reading books on my iPad if I'm away from home and simultaneously reading a bunch of books (which I tend to do).  Then, it's really convenient.

But, otherwise, I really like having the real book in my hand.  I like the experience of shopping for books, of marking my favorite spots (I know you can do this with e-readers, but it's seriously not the same.  With a paper book, I can easily flip to my favorite sections, which I know just based where they are located in the book.  With an e-book, navigating favorite parts, especially if I've taken a lot of notes-- as I tend to do with non-fiction books-- is much more dicey.), of being able to tell by turning the book on its side how much longer the book is, of turning real pages (though the wizards behind such things have made turning an e-book page about as similar to turning a real page as would seem possible)...

I like having bookshelves filled with books (I suppose bookshelves and home libraries will not exist for much longer?) and being surrounded by the books I love.  These experiences seem like they're all on the wane.  Now that my favorite local bookstore is closed, I'm desperately searching for a bookstore to replace it.

Am I alone in this?  I know I'm starting to sound like an elderly person missing a woebegone era, but, seriously, am I the only one who misses real books?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.  If you disagree, maybe you can convince me to see the light...

  1. I am totally with you! I have to have pages to flip and bookmark. I am not ready for change! haha. I am also reading the same book... :)

  2. I totally agree! I love the feeling of a real book and going to a bookstore, and don't think the Kindle/iPad replace it at all. I was against e-readers for quite some time, but now I have the Kindle and it is great for traveling and saving a little shelf space.

  3. I love the real thing but after reading the hardback of The Hunger Games I couldn't wait for a trip to the bookstore. I read the second two on my phone! So when you are desperate to find out what is going to happen, it's great that you can have immediate satisfaction!

    1. I think this is exactly right!! It's nice to not have to get out of bed to go to the bookstore if you desperately need a book in the middle of the night. But I'm so glad it's not the only option (yet)! xo

  4. No computer can replace the real thing. No computer has that lovely new book smell! I too love to go back and reference notes and doing that on my I pad wouldn't seem right. Perhaps I too am stuck in the past but I am quite happy there and don't see myself conforming to the new technologically advanced way of reading anytime soon.

  5. I am so glad to hear I'm not alone!! E-readers have their place, but it appears there is a strong group out there who believe it'll never replace the wonders of a real, live book. Thank you all for your comments!! xo
